Nicole Musgrave (b. 1987, Columbus, OH) is a folklorist, painter, quilter, and teacher based along the Kentucky-Virginia border. Her creative practice is an exploration of devotion, grief, and personal and community memory.

Musgrave received a BA in Folklore from The Ohio State University in 2010 and an MA in Folk Studies from Western Kentucky University in 2018. Her work has been supported through grants from the Kentucky Foundation for Women; the Kentucky Oral History Commission; the National Endowment for the Arts; and through a 2015 artist residency at Have Company in Grand Rapids, MI.

Musgrave currently works as a freelance folklorist and oral historian. She is the Lead Editor for Inside Appalachia’s Folkways Project, where she produces radio stories about Appalachia’s traditional cultural practices. She is currently working on an oral history project for the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, documenting the experiences of child care workers in Central Appalachia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Musgrave also works as a teaching artist, leading free and low-cost classes and workshops in schools and community centers.
